LITHIUM MAINTENANCE THERAPY (FURTHER STUDY)

Abstract
|
|
|
Following the first report of a lithium maintenance therapy on September 1975, the authors observed 30 cases of maic-depressive psychosis who is receiving lithium maintenance therapy more than one year in the Department of Neuropsychiatryj Korea University.
We studied the frequency and duration of manic -depressive episodes before and during lithium maintenance therapy and effective serum lithium level.
The result as follows:
1. Average age of onset was 23.4.
2. Average frequency manic-depressive episodes fell from 3.1 to 1.4 and average duration fell from 9.5±3.5 to 4.5±2.6 weeks in similar period. The result demonstrate very strong evidence of lithium for a preventive effect of manic-depressive episodes and reducing duration of episodes.
3. The effective serum lithium level was 0.64± 0.17mEq/1 in 800 to 1. 500mg daily dosage.
